Prayerful Dependence on the Holy Spirit
Without the leading, empowering and transforming work of the Spirit it’s impossible to be the sent people of God. Jesus was clearly fully led and empowered by the Spirit. In John 20:21-23 Again Jesus said, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.” And with that he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive anyone’s sins, their sins are forgiven; if you do not forgive them, they are not forgiven.” “as he breathed on them. In order to release people into the uncharted waters of their local context without a prescribed program we must be expectant and confident in the ability of the Holy Spirit. In the western context we suffer from two extremes. On the one hand we focus on personal supernatural encounters with God that don’t lead to being sent like Jesus was sent. And on the other hand we have those who go and do “good works” but are not led or empowered by the Spirit. We need the Spirit for Mission as well as personal renewal and direction. We need God to speak to us and through us by the Holy Spirit.
